Aussie Traders: Escaping the 9-5 (An Honest Take)
Let's be honest. The 9-5 isn't for everyone. If you're reading this you've probably felt it already. The alarm. The commute. That feeling you're building someone else's dream on your best hours. I felt the same. So here's my honest take on trading your way out of it, from right here in Australia.
The dream is real. I'm living a version of it
I trade the New York session for a living, from Australia. No boss, no commute, no clocking in. I work one focused window a day and the rest of the time is mine. That's the truth, and it's the same freedom I want for the traders in my community. Financial, time and location freedom.
So yeah, the dream's real. But if I stopped there I'd be selling you the same fantasy every dodgy guru online is selling. Here's the part they leave out.
Now the honest bit: don't quit your job on Monday
This is where most people blow it. They get fired up, quit the job, throw their savings at an account, and pile so much pressure on themselves that they trade scared and blow up. Now they're worse off than when they started.
Trading's a skill, and skills take time. Treat it like learning a trade, not buying a lottery ticket.
- Keep your income while you learn. Your job is paying for your education. That's a good thing. It takes the desperation out of your trading.
- Trade small. Tiny size while you're learning. Early on you're chasing consistency, not money.
- Give it real time. Months, not days. Anyone selling you a quick flip is lying.
- Scale up only when you're consistent. Not when you're impatient.
None of that is as exciting as 'quit your job and get rich.' It's just the version that works.
Why Australia's a decent place to trade from
Plenty of Aussies reckon being on the far side of the world is a handicap. It's the opposite. The New York open, 9:30am their time, lands in our late evening. Roughly late night AEST depending on daylight saving.
- You keep the day job and still learn. The US session runs at night here, so you're not choosing between work and the markets while you're getting good.
- No 4am alarms for the London session. You trade in the evening, on your terms.
- The window's short. The first hour of the New York open is the bit that matters, so it's not an all-nighter. Trade it, then go to bed.
It does mean some late nights, and you've got to be straight with yourself about sleep and discipline. But loads of Aussies trade the US session. You wouldn't be breaking new ground.
What freedom really looks like
Forget the rented supercars on Instagram. The real prize is quieter than that.
- Time. Your day is yours. You work a focused window, not eight hours of someone else's.
- Location. A laptop and a connection is the whole office. Home, or anywhere.
- Control. No roster, no manager. You answer to the process and to yourself.
It's still work. It's still a skill you show up for. But it's your work, on your terms. For a lot of us, that's enough.
The path that gets you there
- 1Keep your income. Let the job fund the learning so you can trade calm, not scared.
- 2Learn one real strategy properly. Not ten half-strategies off YouTube. Go deep on one.
- 3Put in the screen time. Watch the same session every day until you know how it breathes.
- 4Protect the account. Risk small. Survive. Stay in the game long enough to get good.
- 5Get around the right people. A community that keeps you honest beats grinding alone.
- 6Scale slowly. Size up when the results are there, and let the account earn its way up.
The mindset behind it
Escaping the 9-5 through trading isn't about being a genius or getting lucky. It's discipline, patience, and not quitting when it gets hard. And it will get hard. The people who make it aren't the smartest in the room. They're the ones who kept showing up and refused to doubt themselves.
Which is the whole idea behind the name. Don't Doubt The Kid. Back yourself, do the work, do it properly.
